A Word About Direct

Teaching

Principals of Cataloging was one class that I took that was taught almost exclusively with direct teaching methods. The Professor spent time a few hours each session lecturing on the theories behind Cataloging. After that there were usually some activities to do that were designed by the professor to teach us practical skills. The grading was done by scores on tests including a final exam and attendance and participation in class.

After having experienced constructing my own learning I had very little patience for this method of instruction. I know many people who still have a checklist attitude about their education. Direct Instruction works well for this. Students take classes, read books, do tests and check off the courses that they have finished. Learning is not the goal. Checking the right courses off of a list is the goal.

In most of the courses that I have taken there has been a project approach and a mixture of methodology. Some direct teaching in most classes is absolutely essential. I am glad that I had this experience so that I know better what it feels like to be a student.
