Content Area and Grade Level

The webquest was created for 4th grade students preparing to take the MAP test. It is appropriate as written for 5-6 grades also.

The WebQuest can easily be adjusted for use at different levels. Here are some suggestions of ways that you can modify it to meet your particular students capabilities.

  • One task that students are required to perform is to create a budget for their trip. The WebQuest provides students with a form for accomplishing this task. Beginners can just print out the sheet and fill it out by hand. For students needing more of a challenge the spreadsheet can be used digitally. They will need to create a formula that will deal with the numbers that they enter. A graph can also be required as an additional task.
  • Students are asked to estimate the costs that they will incur. The WebQuest provides a structure by suggesting that they need to find costs for travel, food, entertainment, lodging, and equipment. The lesson also gives them daily estimates for food and an estimate for ticket amounts for entertainment. Less structure can be given allowing the students to do more planning and thinking on their own. More support could be given by providing the costs for the students. A teacher can also vary the support given depending on the needs of specific groups of students.

IDEAS FOR IMPLEMENTATION

A teacher may know someone who is willing to play the Mystery Donor or have access to someone who has taken an adventure trip and can come talk to the class. These touches can add to the experience of the USA Adventure.

The students will be using the Internet to do research. It is possible that from the suggested sites they could link to a questionable site.  It is recommended that you have a policy in place for students to use when something like this happens.  Some teachers tell the students to immediatly turn off the monitor and raise their hands.  The teacher then has a chance to come and check out the site and get the student back in an acceptable place.  It is also suggested that there be clear guidelines for situations where a student does not raise their hand, but is found in an inappropriate website (this can include a game or car site-anything off of the topic).

The time in school is always time. For this reason it is suggested that the students do not spend time searching themselves.  If there is a resource that they need that is not already linked to the site have them ask you to find a resource for them.  You might even assign a student who can handle searching well the task of finding web resources when needed.
